How It Works

1

Create the payment

Log into your CheckIssuing portal and submit a payment normally — payee, amount, date, memo. Select your Print from Home funding source. The payment queues for you to print, not for us to mail.

2

Open your print queue

Go to Print from Home → Print Queue. Select one check or a full batch. Click Print — the MICR-encoded check image loads in your browser in under 500ms, ready to send to your printer.

3

Print, hand over, done

Print at 100% scale on your blank check stock. Inspect the check, hand it to your payee, then mark it as Printed in the portal. Your payment history records it as Printed — Not Mailed.

Equipment & Setup

Banks require MICR ink to magnetically read check routing and account numbers. A standard inkjet or non-MICR laser printer will produce checks that are rejected.

MICR laser printer — required

You must use a laser printer loaded with MICR toner (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition). Standard inkjet or non-MICR laser printers will not produce bank-acceptable checks. Troy Group printers and MICR toner cartridges are widely available.

Blank check stock

Standard 8.5" × 11" business check paper from any office supply or specialty check paper supplier. Top, middle, or bottom formats supported. Look for security features: microprint border, void pantograph, and chemically sensitive paper.

Troy MICR alignment guide

The Troy plastic alignment guide lets you calibrate your printer's MICR line position precisely. Run a test print on plain paper, overlay the guide, and verify alignment before using real check stock. Banks have tight tolerances.

Account enablement

Print from Home must be enabled on a funding source, and your user must have the Print from Home access permission. Contact [email protected] — we activate same day.

Common Questions

Yes — provided you use a MICR laser printer with MICR toner. Banks process checks by magnetically reading the MICR line at the bottom. As long as that line is printed with MICR ink, the check is processed identically to any other business check. The check image is generated by CheckIssuing and is structurally identical to what we’d print on our own equipment.

No — the printer must be loaded with MICR toner specifically. Standard laser toner and all inkjet printers will not produce a magnetically readable MICR line. Troy Group is the most common MICR toner supplier for business laser printers. Contact us at [email protected] if you need a printer or toner recommendation.

Blank check stock is available from office supply stores (Staples, Office Depot) and specialty suppliers. Look for standard 8.5″ × 11″ business check paper with security features — microprint border, void pantograph, and chemically sensitive paper. Top, middle, and bottom check formats are all supported. Contact us if you’d like a supplier recommendation.

The per-check fee is the same as a standard mailed check — there’s no surcharge for printing at home. The only cost difference is that postage is $0, since you’re delivering the check yourself. See your Pricing Addendum for your specific per-check rate, or contact your account manager.

Yes. Your account admin controls which users have the Print from Home permission. Users without the permission cannot see or access Print from Home funding sources. This keeps your print workflow appropriately restricted without affecting other users on the account.

Mark the check as Void in your portal — this logs the void and prevents duplicate processing. Physically mark “VOID” across the face of the printed check before discarding it. If the check has already been handed to a payee, contact [email protected] immediately.
